Troubleshooting

“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.”

Contained herein is a list of know bugs and problems that plague us all, and what you can do about it. The contents of this page will change periodically with feedback from users like you, so please feel free to contribute to this knowledge by conveying your experiences to the NIMBioS IT manager. (Including screenshots would be nice too…)

Console Login

"Could not update ICEauthority file"

If you see this error on login:

It usually means one of the following:

  • This is your first time logging into your NIMBioS account from a NIMBioS machine.
  • You are logging into your NIMBioS account from a NIMBioS machine, and you are also currently logged in on another NIMBioS machine.

The solution:

  • Ignore the message and click “Close”. Contact the NIMBioS IT staff if your desktop does not start or fails to run.

"Sorry, the package blcr-dkms failed to install or upgrade"

If you see this error on login:

This is a known bug that has been reported to the Ubuntu developers, but as yet the cause is unknown and there is no fix.

The solution:

  • Ignore the message and click “Close”.

"Enter password to unlock your login keyring"

If you see this error on login:

This is because Ubuntu uses a centralized password management keyring tool that stores all passwords in a single database that can be managed with a single, master password. Sometimes this took gets confused.

The solution:

  • Click on the power icon in the upper-right corner of the screen:
  • In the pop-up menu that appears, click on “System Settings”
  • In the “Control Center” window that appears, click on “Passwords and Encryption Keys”, located under “Other” at the bottom of the window. (You may need to scroll down.)
  • In the “Passwords and Encryption Keys” window that appears, click on the “Passwords” tab.
  • In the list of keys, right-click on the entry titled “Passwords: login” and select “Delete” from the pop-up menu that appears.

Note: Due to a bug in this program, the “Passwords: login” entry will not actually disappear from the list after it is deleted. This is okay.

Printing

Nothing Comes Out Of The Printer

If you send a job to the printer, and nothing comes out, it usually means:

  • Someone beat you to the printer, and accidentally picked up your printout along with their own.
  • Your printout contains pictures or graphs of sufficient size such that your print request has exhausted the available memory in the printer.
  • Your document contains invalid or corrupt PDF or PostScript code that the printer cannot understand.
  • You are printing to the Toshiba copier, and the copier is “having one of it's fits” again.

The Solution:

  • Check around near the printer to make sure that someone hasn't beaten you there and simply moved your printout off to one side.
  • Your file may contain pictures or graphs of sufficient size such that your print request has exhausted the available memory of the printer.
    • Symptoms
      • When you submit your print job, a light on the printer blinks (to indicate that the printer is receiving data), but there is no output from the printer.
      • When you submit your print job, a light on the printer blinks (to indicate that the printer is receiving data), but only the first X pages are printed, and the rest are missing.
    1. Try printing just one page.
    2. If that works, try printing 10 pages.
    3. Continue through the document, printing only a small page count, until you are either able to get the entire document printed, or you are able to isolate the trouble page. If you do find a page that simply will not print, you may be able to edit your document or convert that page to another output format such that the printer will accept it.
  • The file may contain corrupt or invalid PDF or PostScript code that the printer cannot understand.
    1. Try exporting or converting your document to another format. For instance, if your document is a PostScript (*.ps) document, try converting it to PDF (*.pdf) or Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps), and then try printing the converted document.
    2. Also try printing to a different printer. Each printer manufacturer uses their own printer language interpreter, and it could be that another manufacturer's printer may handle your particular document properly.
  • If you are printing to the Toshiba copier, try shutting down and restarting the copier.
NOTE: Do NOT simply turn off the Toshiba. The Toshiba has an internal hard drive that may become corrupted in the event that it suddenly loses power. Instead, issue the shutdown command from the control panel. If you do not know how to do this, find a NIMBioS staff member or an NIMBioS IT staff member to assist you.

I Cannot Print Duplex From Microsoft Office Applications Running Under Wine

This is a known problem, and there is currently no fix.

Remote Access

"WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!"

If you see an error similar to this when you attempt to connect via SSH/SFTP:

This usually means that this host has been re-installed or upgraded since your last connection. But it could also mean that someone malicious is attempting to hijack your SSH/SFTP connection.

The solution:

  • Contact your NIMBioS IT manager to make sure that this error is not due to a malicious hacking attempt.
  • Once you are certain that this is not a hacking attempt, remove the old keys from your SSH client's known_hosts file.
