Francisco Úbeda de Torres

Francisco Úbeda de Torres is an Assistant Professor in the UT Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. He earned an M.Sc. (Licenciatura) in Economics at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. At Oxford University, he earned an M.Sc. in Biology in the Zoology Department. He finished his graduate studies as a Fulbright Scholar in the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology Department at Harvard University, where he received a Ph.D. in Biology.
Dr. Úbeda is interested in conflict between genes within an organism. He has investigated two paradigmatic cases of intragenomic conflict: conflict over transmission (meiotic drive) and conflict over expression (genomic imprinting). His work on meiotic drive suggested the need for a new explanation for the ubiquity of Mendelian segregation. His research on genomic imprinting contributed to a better understanding of the complex interaction between imprinted genes. He is also interested in other forms of conflict, namely the evolution of paternal genome elimination and the recombination hotspot paradox. He has also been active in the area of evolutionary medicine, contributing an explanation to the clinical phenotype of epigenetic disorders.
