NIMBioS Tuesday Seminar Series
In conjunction with the interdisciplinary activities of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS), a seminar series will be hosted at NIMBioS every other Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the NIMBioS Lecture Hall on the 4th floor of 1534 White Ave., Suite 400 Seminar speakers will focus on their research initiatives at the interface of mathematics and many areas of the life sciences. Light refreshments will be served starting at 3 p.m.

Topic:A simple mathematical model for signal processing in macrophages
Abstract: Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) senses evolutionarily conserved
molecular patterns, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), from the outer membrane
of gram-negative bacteria and triggers pro-inflammatory response. This
is why our pinky gets swollen within a few hours after it gets cut.
Both the key controlling components and their kinetics of the TLR4
signaling pathways are poorly understood. In this talk, I will present
a simple mathematical model of an LPS-activated TLR4 signaling network
and will attempt to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the
experimentally observed dosage-dependent early innate immune response.
