Summary.

Summary. As the agent based models (ABM) of biological systems are increasingly used due to their ability to rigorously model the complexity of these systems as well as capturing the global emergent of the their dynamics, introducing optimal control methods, in these type of models would be of a great benefit to the use and efficacy of the ABM. The fact that there is no state space description of ABM makes applying the optimal control very challenging. Proposed talks, in this minisymposium, will aim at presenting the latest attempts to use different optimal control approaches for agent based models of biological systems. These talks will cover subjects related to ecological, virological and immunological systems. Using an optimal control in ABM of these problems is of great importance because it would help to identify the effective intervention in problem related prey and predator and drug treatment for infectious and non infectious diseases. A variety approaches, such as algebraic-based control method and aggregate model approach, has been identified by the NIMBios working group on Optimal Control and Optimization for Individual-based and Agent-based Models to solve this problem.
